Monthly Conversations

Our purpose is to engage community members in our conversations by treating each voice as equal, each opinion as valid, and taking the high road with our efforts. We learn from each other in a climate created to allow for new and lasting friendships.

We encourage new people to participate through word of mouth, social media and/or through our family and friends. If you are waiting for an invitation to participate, this is it, please join us.

Each month, a conversation gathering is held to sometimes address a specific topic or promote on organized open forum (Talking Circle) to bring forward ideas, concerns, information, whatever is important that furthers the work of Rapid City Community Conversations.

Monthly conversations are typically held the third Thursday of the month at 6pm; the location varies based on the topic.

We look forward to seeing you.

"Healing Our Shared Past, Present, and Future: The Hiawatha Indian Insane Asylum"

From 1902-1933, Native Americans who misbehaved in boarding schools or who angered reservation agents were incarcerated at the Hiawatha Asylum in Canton, SD – the linchpin of federal "Indian" policy. By the time it closed, ~400 Native Americans from across the U.S. had been incarcerated there. Until recently, this part of our state and national history was virtually unknown. As Keepers of the Canton Native Insane Asylum Story, Anne Dilenschneider and Jerry Fogg share the story in order to heal this wound in our own time.

Summer Solstice Celebration 20190620.jpg

Summer Solstice Celebration

We will gather at Canyon Lake Park for an evening on conversation, storytelling, and s'mores'. All are welcome, including families.

The evening will begin with a cook out. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided, please bring a dish to share. Storytelling and stargazing will be highlights for the dusk hours. Plenty of time for reflection and socialization. This will be a relaxed and contemplative get together. Hope to see you there. Bring your own lawn chairs.

We will be at the Chimney Picnic Shelter, west side of park.
